I purchased this tree when it was selling for $99.00 just last year I believe. I now see the tree has significantly gone up in price. In short, I am very pleased with the tree. It's slim and exactly what I hoped it would be. It truly has the original feel like the one I remember from my grandmother's years ago. I purchased a rotating base which I used instead of the base that came with it. Nice tree for the money. Hope it will last for many years to come.

OK, we had an Alum. Christmas tree that was sold back in the 1960's that belonged to a my mom, so we knew what to expect from a retro Alum.Christmas Tree. Don't buy this product. It is poorly constructed. The "trunk" of the tree split soon after I assembled it. The tree was not heavily decorated or mistreated. The seller did not respond to my e-mails. Take a close look at customer remarks about this seller. You will find a similar patern of complaints as well as frequent complaints of high shipping costs and exorbitant restocking fees. In my opinion, Amazon should be ashamed to associate itself with this seller.

The item is intricate, having villagers and lighted villages placed throughout the tree, Santa in his sleigh is pulled by the eight reindeers around the tree's Star topper, and 3 trains circle within. I was concerned about its shipping, and found it very carefully packed. I haven't counted the number of songs the music box unwinds, but there are many, and the music is delightfully complex. The tree can be `on' with lights, music and motion or without the music box. You can choose to power it with either the adapter or 3 AAA batteries... instructions advise to not have the batteries installed when using the adapter. The unit turns itself off after an hour. I found that my new AAA batteries provided operation for only 2 or 3 plays (hours). The battery cover is held by a very small screw and with the tree being so very intricate, I am cautious when turning it over to unscrew the cover to remove/install new batteries - and hate to disturb the snowflake glitter. I've decided that for centering the tree on a table for company viewing on all sides, I'll use the batteries. Otherwise, for its viewing on a side table, I'll use the adapter. Empty nesting, holiday decorating is no longer enjoyable, but this lovely and more sophisticated décor gave back the pleasure.

Generally this is not a problem if you intend to hang it for display. However, these are not toys and could be easily ruined if not handled carefully.

I love a county style Christmas but have a very small space to achieve this look. This tree is slim though a little sparse on branches. I put it up on a wood box then added some beautiful flocked branch stems along with my three other "smaller" trees and I finally have the look I was going for. On Thanksgiving we were shocked to open up our china storage cases and find that the green band on our Spode was chipping off. Mind you, these plates have been used only a few times over the past 12 years. We store them in cushioned cases, with bubble wrap between each plate. We have NEVER put them in the dishwasher. They have been treated and stored with great care as they were a gift from a deceased loved-one.



Now on Amazon, I see that there is a clear problem. Too many people are reporting paint failures for this to be caused by dishwashers or improper care. The people that have had their sets for 20+ years - obviously there was a time when Spode took great care to produce quality china. Today however, you never know what you will get. The Spode name is no longer necessarily a sign of quality.



What I am most surprised about is this comment on the Spode website: "Certain tableware patterns will expose you to lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm." Certain? Which? The ones that are flaking apart on our holiday tables??



When lead paint chips/peels/flakes, lead dust can land anywhere. This is a serious health concern far more important than just our plates not looking good! E-mail Spode and let them know that this is unacceptable!



12/29/08 Follow-up: We had lead testing done on these plates, and they WERE VERY positive. They were made in England, early 1990's. Spode has offered to replace them, but I don't want them in my home.

I started collecting this pattern about 3 years ago because several of my family members have had it and I have always loved it because it is such a Christmas classic. I love the pieces I purchased a few years ago. But BEWARE, this pattern is no longer made in England, but now made in Malaysia. I just returned from Macy's where I was planning on purchasing many more pieces. I picked up a plate today at Macy's and noted that it seemed cheap, so I turned it over and it read "Made in Malaysia". Every single plate, mug, bowl at Macy's was marked "Made in Malaysia." The prices have stayed the same, but the quality has plummeted big time on this. I'm very sad and plan on getting rid of my entire collection and starting over with something made of better quality.

I have been buying Spode for years. I love them. They are really beautiful. However, recents purchases have not had the quality as my older dishes. I've noticed that on the newer dishes, the bottom bottom side is not smooth. It's rough, has bubbles and holes. I don't like the way they feel.

I purchased 8 place settings of the Spode Christmas Tree pattern for my wife for Christmas. Every set was seriously defective, many places had no glazing at all. There were rough spots throughout, including very bad places on the rims of cups. This is the worst quality in dishes of any price I have ever seen. Do not buy this product; you will be deeply disappointed.
